Academic Advancement What is the 'Academic = Advancement...'=20 information on the student user form? If you or your institution = desires it, you=20 can enter dates and scores of actual assessment and GED = tests taken=20 by the student into the 'Academic advancement achieved by = this=20 program' area on the student's user form, and you can view = this=20 information on any report or download that displays = information at=20 the student level; for example, if you select = Downloads=20 >>> Student activity stats and choose the = Per=20 student report format option, or if you select = Downloads=20 >>> Student list spreadsheet, you will be able = to view=20 the academic advancement data on the report. 11/03/2004
Administration Can students be imported = into the=20 MHC database from a spreadsheet or a text file? Refer to the information = under=20 Management...Manage users...Import=20 students...Student import overview for = details. 12/08/2003
Administration What does "Email LoginID + = Password To The=20 Above" mean? If the Email Login ID + = Password To The=20 Above switch =3D 'Y', the web server will automatically = 1) send an=20 email message to this user's email address within 15 = minutes,=20 informing them of their login ID and password, and 2) change = this=20 switch to 'N'. 11/05/2003
Administration What does "Permitted To = Login"=20 mean?
If "Permitted To Login" =3D No, does that mean = that the=20 student is not occupying a license (seat)?
The "Permitted To Login" = switch is=20 administrative and has no relationship to licenses = (seats).=20 You or your technical staff may want to prevent one or more = users=20 from logging into the system, without removing the = student(s) from=20 their assigned class.

A student is able to login if = 1) the=20 licenses for this institution have not expired, 2) the = student's=20 user record has been added to the database, and their = "Permitted To=20 Login" switch =3D Yes, and 3) the student has been = assigned to=20 a class.

A teacher or admin is able to login if = their user=20 record has been added to the database, and their "Permitted = To=20 Login" switch =3D Yes.

Any student who has been = assigned to a=20 class takes up a license. To remove a student from a class = (thereby=20 freeing up a license/seat), click on Management...'Manage=20 Classes'...'Assign Students To Classes.' Change the student = status=20 to 'Not Assigned'. The license/seat is now available, but = the=20 student record is intact.

Administration - Teacher I just received my teacher login = id and=20 password. What should I do first? All of MHC's GED Interactive = -=20 Online administrative functions must be performed on the = website.
If you have not already done so, go to the = following=20 url:
https://www.mhcgedonline.com/ =
and login with your user name and password.
When you = have=20 successfully logged in, you'll see a web page which verifies = your=20 user name and type.
Change Password
If you = wish to=20 change your password, supply a new email address, etc., = click on=20 My Profile ... Update My Profile =

Create=20 Class Records
We recommend that you create class = records at=20 the earliest opportunity. Select the Management menu option=20 Manage classes ... Add new class to add each = class to=20 the database. There should be only one record in the = database for=20 each class you teach. The Class ID should uniquely identify = the=20 class and make it easy for you to spot the class record.=20

Allocate Seats to Classes
The next step = is to=20 disburse licenses/seats to each of your classes. Under the=20 Management menu, select Allocate seats ... by = Class=20
For each of your classes, set an enrollment limit until = you have=20 used all your available seats. If enrollments shift, you can = alter=20 these numbers later.

Enroll Students
Once = the=20 class records have been created and licenses/seats = allocated, you=20 should create student records, then assign students to their = classes. Select the Management menu option Manage = Users ...=20 Add new student

Assign Students to=20 Classes
Lastly, click Manage classes ... = Assign=20 students to classes to register each student in the = appropriate=20 class.

Archive I received a message that = tells me=20 1 or more students have been automatically archived. What = causes a=20 student to be auto-archived? They aren't already = archived, and=20 their last session date is older than 120 days. 10/26/2006
Archive student What does Mark for Archive = mean? Refer to the FAQ entitled, = 'Marked for=20 archive'. 08/06/2004
Email I want to send an email = to several=20 people at once. Is there a way to do that? There is a way to create = a single=20 email for several users.
On the Management menu, click = Manage=20 users ... Email selected users.
A list of = users who=20 have email addresses will be presented to you. You can then = check=20 the users you wish to email, click 'Done', and a 'mailto' = hyperlink=20 will automatically be created, consisting of the selected = email=20 addresses, separated by a semi-colon. When you click on the=20 hyperlink, your email program will automatically pop up, and = those=20 email addresses will be filled in for you.
10/29/2003
Enrollment Date What is enrollment date? Enrollment date is entered = manually by=20 teachers and admininstrators. It is not automatically = entered by the=20 system, because the date that the student is entered into = the=20 database might be very different than their actual GED = Program=20 enrollment date. This is an optional field which you may use = or=20 ignore, depending on the requirements of your own = institution. 03/02/2005

Internet Explorer Error Internet Explorer gives me the=20 error,
"The Page Cannot Be Displayed."
If you get this message when = browsing some=20 secure Web sites, check your cipher strength. You should be = using=20 128-bit encryption. To determine the current level of = encryption on=20 your computer, run Internet Explorer, then click = Help...About=20 Internet Explorer. Your computer's level of encryption is = displayed=20 next to the words "Cipher Strength." A 40-bit or 56-bit = cipher=20 strength indicates that the Internet Explorer High = Encryption Pack=20 has not been installed on your system. To resolve this = issue, go to=20 Microsoft's website to update your copy of Internet Explorer = with=20 the correct security encryption:

Launch Error I cannot launch the program, and = I am at a=20 site which has a proxy server. Be sure that your browser has = the=20 following checked: bypass proxy server for local = addresses 08/18/2004
Launch Error I clicked the Launch = button and=20 nothing happened. You probably have a = pop-up blocker=20 installed on your computer. The login screen is a pop-up = window, so=20 you have to disable your pop-up blocker in order to login. = (You can=20 turn it on again when you are finished using GED Online for = the=20 day.)
To bypass your pop-up blocker without having to = turn it=20 off, keep the Ctrl key pressed down when you click the = Launch=20 button. You will get a special box that pops up asking if = you want=20 to run the program. Click OK.
01/11/2006
Launch Error I tried to launch GED and = received an=20 error, 'You must have an active internet connection...'. I = have an=20 active internet connection, and am on a network. There may be an issue with the = 'proxy=20 server', which is a security feature on many networks. =
If you=20 suspect that this is the case, you may want to contact your = local=20 network person.
The following are instructions for = switching to=20 our alternative launch for network users who are having = difficulty=20 getting past the proxy: (You must have GED version 3 or=20 above). To enable the change for the Proxy settings = issue please=20 follow the following steps.=20
  1. Uninstall any previous versions of GED Online.=20
  2. Install GED online using the version 3 CD. The default = directory that the program is installed to is C:\Program = Files\MHC=20 Interactive\GEDONLINE ** **(This will be referenced as the = default=20 directory--if you have installed the program to a = different=20 location you will follow the same procedures using your = custom=20 default directory)=20
  3. In the default directory there will be a folder = entitled=20 =93prox2=94. You will need to copy from that folder to the = default=20 directory two files- the files are =93dnl.exe=94 and = =93upload.exe=94.=20 When prompted to =93Confirm File Replace=94 click yes for = both files.=20
  4. Follow the same procedure to copy from the =93prox2=94 = folder the=20 three remaining files =93gmsq.exe=94, =93smsg.exe=94, and = =93quit.a7r=94 to=20 the folder labeled =93tools=94(this folder is located = within the=20 default directory).

As of 10/25/2004, = version=20 3.2 of GED online will be available. This version will = automatically=20 test for the best way to connect through the proxy server. = Contact=20 your teacher or administrator for an updated disk.

Licenses (Seats) How are licenses (seats)=20 distributed? Total licenses (seats) = are=20 purchased at the account level.

The purchaser = administrator=20 creates a record for each institution which is participating = in the=20 program and allocates licenses to each institution. =

For=20 example, an account may purchase 500 licenses to be = distributed=20 among 4 institutions. The purchaser-administrator creates 4=20 institution records and allocates 125 licenses to each. =

The=20 institutional administrator can disburse licenses either to = teachers=20 or to classes, whichever is more convenient. A switch in the = institution profile controls this option. If licenses are = allocated=20 to teachers, then teachers create their own class records = and=20 determine how many of licenses to allocate to each class. If = licenses are allocated at the class level, then the = institutional=20 admin must create class records and allocate the licenses to = each=20 class.

The entire setup process for licenses/seats = is as=20 follows:=20
  1. create the institution record(s) including the total = licenses=20 allowed for each=20
  2. create the teacher records and distribute the total = licenses=20 allowed per teacher=20
  3. create the class records and allocate the total = licenses=20 allowed per class=20
  4. assign students to their classes =

Assigning a=20 student to a class causes a seat to be taken. Note that = creating the=20 student records is not part of the license setup because a = student=20 who is not assigned to a class in the database does not take = up a=20 license. This allows you to create student records ahead of = time, if=20 you prefer.
08/27/2003
Licenses (Seats) I have students who have = completed the=20 course or left the program. Can I re-assign their licenses = to=20 someone else? How? There are two ways to remove a = student=20 from a class (thereby freeing up a license). =

Reassign the=20 Student
From the Management menu choose Manage = Classes=20 ... Assign Students To Classes.
For each student = you wish=20 to remove from the class, change the class assignment to = 'Not=20 Assigned.' This method frees up the license for re-use but = leaves=20 the student record in the database.

Delete the = Student=20 Record
If a student is assigned to a class and you = delete the=20 student record from the database, that license will be freed = up for=20 re-use as well, but the deleted record will be lost.
10/29/2003
Login error I tried to login and = received the=20 message, "You have not yet been assigned a class." If you are a teacher, = contact the=20 Administrator. If you are a student, contact your = instructor. Once=20 you have been assigned to a class, you'll be able to = login. 08/27/2003
Marked for Archive What does Mark for Archive = mean? Marking a student as = archived=20 enables you to retain the information for students who are = no longer=20 in the program, but 'moves them out of your way'. Marking a = student=20 as archived un-assigns them from the class that they were = linked to,=20 if this has not already been done.
Being archived has = no=20 affect on reporting student activity, provided that option = Any=20 Class is selected when requesting the report. = Archived=20 students' records are still in the database. If a student is = marked=20 as archived, and an activity report is requested for a date = range=20 when that student was taking a class, and 'Any Class' is = chosen,=20 their activity will appear on the report.
Under menu = option=20 "Management...Manage users", you will find an option called = "Mark=20 selected students as archived", which allows you to select = several=20 students all at the same time to change their = archived_yes_or_no=20 switch to Yes. You can also change it to yes (or back to no) = on the=20 student's user update screen. When you mark a student as = archived,=20 their ok-to-login is changed to 'N' for you automatically, = and they=20 are unassigned from the current class that they're in. (Of = course,=20 you can manually change these back if you want to.) Students = marked=20 as archived do not appear on the assign-students-to-class = form.=20
The list / edit students option has now been divided = into 3=20 categories: 1) list / edit all students 2) list / edit = non-archived=20 students 3) list / edit archived students

Message Center What is the Message = Center? The Message Center allows = communication between students and teachers within MHC's = GED=20 Interactive - Online system. The Message Center is = not=20 email, and it is not instant messaging. =

If you=20 are a student, you can send a message to your teacher. =

If=20 you are a teacher, you can send a message to a student or to = your=20 administrator.

Message recipients who are logged on = to=20 MHC's GED Interactive - Online will receive the = message right=20 away. If they have chosen the option "listen for Messages" = option, a=20 pop-up window will notify them that a new message is = waiting.=20

Users who are not "listening" may not see a new = message=20 until they look for it, or until they navigate to another = screen.=20

Users who are not logged into MHC's GED = Interactive -=20 Online when you send your message will not see it until = the next=20 time they login to the program.

Unlike email, = messages have=20 a default expiration date of just a few days.
04/29/2004
Message Center When I try to send a student a = new=20 (non-reply) message from the local program, I get a response = that=20 reads, "You must select 'Send new message' from the 'Message = Center'=20 dropdown menu on the web page." Why? This is a limitation of the = local program,=20 because it has to download all of the information that it = needs to=20 the local hard drive. The program would have to download the = names=20 of all of the students assigned to a teacher at startup, in = order to=20 enable the program to provide a complete list of students to = send a=20 new message to. Customers are allowed to use one generic = teacher for=20 their entire program, which could potentially translate into = thousands of names on the list.
We concluded that it = might cause=20 more harm than good to allow a list of all students assigned = to a=20 teacher to be downloaded to the local hard drive, rather = than only=20 the list of students who have sent a message.
We = recommend that=20 if you want to send a new message to a student, you alt-tab = to the=20 browser window and send the message from the browser.

Missing Student Stats The student's statistics are not = appearing=20 on their performance summary or the download of their = activity. You may want to call up that = student via=20 the Management >>> Manage users >>> = List/edit=20 students option and see if their last activity was a = Download or an=20 Upload. If their last activity was a Download, then they = have not=20 uploaded their most recent activity to the online database. = If this=20 is the case, then the student can upload their activity by = simply=20 logging into GED Online and selecting the Upload button. = 03/23/2004
Online performance summ = error I cannot access the = student=20 performance summary. It does not come up when I click on = submit.=20 What might be the problem? Your problem may be a = popup=20 blocker. If you know how to shut it off, then turn it off = before you=20 launch the performance summary, and feel free to turn it = back on=20 once you have exited the performance summary. If you're not = sure if=20 you have a popup blocker, open up Internet Explorer, click = Tools,=20 Internet Options, Advanced, and look for a Pop-Up Blocker = category.=20 If you find it, disable the pop-up blocker and try again to = access=20 the student performance summary. If this doesn't work, or if = this is=20 not the problem, try to force the web player to provide more = information by keeping the 'Ctrl' key pressed down before = you click=20 the Submit button, and keep holding down the 'Ctrl' key = until you=20 get a response from the computer. You will probably get a = dialogue=20 box that gives you a more specific description of the = problem, and=20 you might be able to override the problem by clicking 'OK'. = 01/11/2006
Password How do I change my = password? All of MHC's GED Interactive = -=20 Online administrative functions must be performed on the = website.
If you are not already logged into the MHC GED=20 Interactive-Online website, go to the following url:
https://www.mhcgedonline.com/ =
and login with your user name and password.
When you = have=20 successfully logged in, click the menu option at the = top/left called=20 My Profile ... Update My Profile

Performance summary = error I selected "Student = performance=20 summary" from the menu and received this error: Unable to = locate=20 Scripting Xtra "SecureNetXtra" needed by function = "snxRegister"=20 called from this file. The file may not run correctly. The file that it is = referencing is=20 "SecureNetXtra.x32" and it is found at this path in the = application=20 "MHC Interactive\GEDONLINE\Xtras". The error implies that = the file=20 is not there or it cannot be read. If you open the folder = "MHC=20 Interactive\GEDONLINE\Xtras" and do not see the = SecureNetXtra.x32=20 file, then you may need to re-do the install of the program. = If you=20 do see the file, or you have already reinstalled, then the = problem=20 is probably related to security on your system. 03/23/2004
Performance summary error The student has done a lot of = work, which=20 appears on the activity report, but the performance summary = shows=20 nothing, or very little, or the reverse: the online = performance=20 summary shows a lot of time, but the activity download does = not. Program Exits On = Tests I tried to take the Math = Unit 2=20 test, and the program quit. Several tests are = preceeded by=20 movies. If you have installed some other program which = overwrote=20 your QuickTime player to a version lower than version 5, the = program=20 might exit when it tries to play the movie. To check your = QuickTime=20 player and upgrade it to the correct version,=20
  1. Close all programs, including the browser, but do not = shut=20 down Windows or turn off the pc, because you probably need = to=20 update the Quicktime player on your computer.
  2. Click Start >>> Programs = >>>=20 MHC Interactive >>> GED Online = >>>=20 Tools >>> System Help
  3. Click on the Quicktime Help link at left
  4. If the QuickTime version at the top left of the box is = less=20 than 5, click the Install Quicktime button.
  5. Run-time error When I try to launch the = program, I get a=20 message that says, 'Network Request ID Is Empty' This message is a way of saying = that it=20 cannot make a connection from your pc to the online = database.=20 Typically, the cause is one of the following:=20
  1. There is no connection to the internet
This = error=20 often appears when the student's internet connection = cannot be=20 found by the program. If you suspect that this might be = the case,=20 and you know that you have a good connection to the = internet, wait=20 a minute and then try again.=20
  2. Firewall security
The problem may be your internet = security software, which is trying to block one of the exe = files=20 that are required to pass data back and forth, (Start.exe = and=20 DNL.exe). If your operating system is Windows XP SP2 = (which has a=20 built-in firewall) or an installed firewall such as Norton = or=20 McAfee, try disabling the Firewall or selecting Permit=20 Always on the warning dialogue box(es), to see if that = corrects the problem.=20
  3. Launching the program incorrectly
The student = should be=20 sure to run the program by clicking Start = >>>=20 Programs >>>, and not by first going to = the url=20 and launching from there, because starting the program at = least=20 once by clicking Start >>> Programs = >>> causes a special plug-in to be installed. =

Run-time Error When I try to run the = program,=20 Internet Explorer pops up and then disappears, so I can't = login. You probably have a = program=20 installed on your computer which eliminates pop-up windows. = The=20 login screen is a pop-up window, so you'll have to disable = your=20 pop-up stopper in order to login. You can enable it again = when=20 you're finished using MHC's GED Interactive - Online = for the=20 day. To bypass your pop-up blocker, keep the Ctrl key = pressed down=20 when you click the Launch button. You will get a special box = that=20 pops up asking if you want to run the program. Click = OK. 01/11/2006
Student Time On a student's performance = summary, their=20 total time is less than the lesson/test time. In the local file, (where the = student's=20 data gets accumulated until he/she uploads their data by = exiting=20 properly or by clicking the Upload button), there is no = field for=20 saving either "additional" time or "total" time. The local = file only=20 accommodates lesson and test data.
The executable = program keeps=20 track of "total" time spent using GED Interactive for = that=20 particular session inside of a memory register. If the = student=20 exits/uploads properly, the value in this register is = uploaded to=20 their user record and added to whatever was already there. =
When=20 the student exits without uploading: their lesson/test data = is saved=20 to their local hard drive... it resides there until the = student=20 performs an upload, next day or next week or next month. But = that=20 session time becomes lost.
If a student habitually exits = without=20 uploading, the disparity between lesson/test time and total = time=20 increases.
There is no register or field for "Additional = time";=20 it is calculated. "Additional time" =3D Total time minus = lesson/test=20 time.
06/01/2006
Student Time The student has logged = into the=20 system at least once, but no time has ever been recorded for = the=20 student. Unless the student = launches the=20 program, time will not be recorded for the student. It may = be that=20 the student has surfed to our online learning site, and = thinks that=20 he/she is using the actual GED Interactive program. To be = sure that=20 the student is using the program, they should send their = teacher a=20 message from within one of the program's lessons or = tests,=20 which will prove that they have launched the program, as the = message=20 will contain the student's location within GED=20 Interactive. 04/29/2004
User Profile What does "Email LoginID + = Password To The=20 Above" mean? You will see the "Email Login ID = +=20 Password To The Above" option when you are adding or = updating users.=20 For users with valid email addresses, selecting 'Yes' for = this=20 option means that an email will be sent to them within 20 = minutes,=20 telling them their login id and password. 08/27/2003
User Profile What does "View Lists On = Entry=20 Forms" mean? When adding records to = the=20 database, you have the option to see all of the existing = records at=20 the bottom of the screen. If you don't want to see them, = change this=20 setting to N.

The system reads this setting when you = login,=20 so if you change this setting, it will not take affect until = the=20 next time you login.

Writing Essay Grade How do I grade a student's = Writing essay?=20 A Writing essay can be graded by = clicking=20 on Management>>>Manage users>>>List / = edit=20 ungraded Writing essays or by clicking=20 Links>>>Student performance summary and = retrieving=20 the online student summary, then clicking on the Writing = essay score=20 box. 09/10/2004
Writing Essay Grade The appearance of the = student's=20 writing essay text isn't formatted exactly the same on the=20 performance summary screen as on the html grading form. The = content=20 is the same, but the line spacing is sometimes a bit = different.=20 Why? The dimensions of the = performance=20 summary's text box are almost identical to the box in the = local=20 program where the student entered the text, so the line = spacing and=20 wrapping match almost exactly. In the html grading form, the = text=20 formatting cannot exactly match the entry box because it is = rendered=20 in html, rather than a Macromedia text box. 10/04/2004
